How to Setup Crystal for Outlook (Beta)

It’s been almost a year since we started receiving requests for an Outlook integration that acts like Crystal for Gmail. The wait is over. Crystal for Outlook is now in beta.

As is the case with beta software, bugs may exist. If you experience strange behavior, just let us know (email us at hello@crystalknows.com). We’ll fix them.

Requirements

Microsoft has specific requirements for Outlook add-ins:

  1. The email account must reside on Exchange 2013 or later. This is included with Office 365, Exchange Online, or on-premises installation. (Add-ins will not work with POP or IMAP email accounts).
  2. You must be using Outlook 2013 or later, Outlook for MAC (2013 or later), Outlook Web App, or OWA for devices.
  3. If you’re managing your own server, you may need to enable the app installation via the Exchange Admin center. You will likely need system and network Admins for this.

You can see more about the requirements here: https://dev.office.com/docs/add-ins/overview/requirements-for-running-office-add-ins

Installing the App

Installation looks different based on what version of outlook you use. We’ve broken it down accordingly:

Windows Desktop App

Select “File” from you Outlook navigation and click the “Manage Add-Ins” button on the lower area of the right pane (pictured below):

This will take you to the web client, where you can follow the steps outlined in the video in the Web Users section. Once completed, you’ll need to restart your Outlook App for Crystal to load.

Mac App

Outlook for Mac has poor add-in support at the moment, so the process is a bit less intuitive.

First, double click an email in Outlook to open the read view. From there, click “Manage Add-ins” on the tab:

This will take you to the web client, where you can follow the steps outlined in the video in the Web Users section. Once completed, you’ll need to restart your Outlook App for Crystal to load.

Web Users

After the beta period, Crystal for Outlook will be available in the Office store. For now, you’ll need to install the add-in manually. We’ve outlined how to do this in the video below:

Once out of Beta, you’ll be able to add Crystal via the Microsoft Office Store.

Windows Desktop App

After installing Crystal, a “View Personality” button should appear on your Outlook toolbar. Click that button while viewing or writing an email to view to start viewing personalities:

Mac App

To see personality information Mac, you’ll have to open the read view by double clicking an email, and Clicking the Crystal Knows tab, as seen below:

We’re hoping to expand this functionality as Microsoft adds more functionality for Mac add-ins.

When Crystal for Outlook exits the beta period, you will need to add the add-in from the Office store to receive updates.
